To receive the Child Tax Credit, you must file your Minnesota state income tax. Tax filing season goes through April 15.

What is the Minnesota Child Tax Credit?

Beginning this year, you may qualify for a Child Tax Credit of up to $1,750 for each qualifying child in your family under age 18. The Child Tax Credit is refundable, meaning it will reduce the amount of income taxes you pay, and many families will receive a tax refund.

Your family may qualify for $1,750 per eligible child if your income is up to $35,000 for married couples and $29,500 for other kinds of families. Families with incomes above those amounts may qualify for a Child Tax Credit less than $1,750 per child, as long as your income is below the following limits:

Who qualifies for the Child Tax Credit?

Generally, you must meet these requirements to claim Minnesota’s Child Tax Credit:

  • You were a full-year or part-year resident of Minnesota in 2023 (with certain exceptions for military members).

  • You are not a dependent of another person.

  • Your family includes one or more qualifying children.

  • You/your family members have a Social Security Number, an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), or an Adoption Taxpayer Number (ATIN).

How do I claim my Child Tax Credit?

You must file a Minnesota income tax form, even if you don’t earn enough income requiring you to file income taxes. You may receive a refund even if you don’t owe taxes on the income you earned over the past year.

In 2024, the regular tax filing period began on January 29 and ends April 15.
